- The output is a picture of the page. Text becomes pixels, so it is no longer selectable, searchable or accessible to a screen reader.
- Rendering quality is bounded by the resolution the page is rasterised at — enlarging the result afterwards will look soft.
- Encrypted or password-protected PDFs cannot be opened.
- Large or graphically complex documents take longer and use more memory, noticeably so on phones.
Troubleshooting
The PDF will not open
Password-protected files must be unlocked in a PDF reader first. A file that is corrupt at the source will fail here too.
Text in the exported image is fuzzy
Export as PNG rather than JPEG and use the page image at its natural size — JPEG compression softens text edges, and upscaling cannot restore them.
The browser tab becomes unresponsive
Render fewer pages at a time. Each page is rasterised in memory, so a long document is best handled in batches.
