Limits & things to know
- Converting to JPG discards transparency and fills it with a solid background, because JPEG has no alpha channel. Use PNG or WebP to keep it.
- Animated GIFs are converted from their first frame only — a canvas holds a single still image.
- Converting between lossy formats compounds compression loss. Convert from the highest-quality original you have rather than from a previous export.
- Very large images can exceed browser canvas limits, which are lower on phones than on desktops.
Troubleshooting
Transparency turned into a solid colour
That is JPG output. Choose PNG for lossless transparency, or WebP for transparency at a smaller size.
The converted file is larger than the source
Converting a compressed JPG to PNG inflates it, since PNG is lossless. Convert to WebP instead if the goal is a smaller file.
Only the first frame of an animation converted
Expected — canvas-based conversion is frame-by-frame. Keep the original GIF or use a dedicated animation tool.
Privacy & data handling
Images are decoded and re-encoded on a canvas inside your browser. Nothing is uploaded, so converting screenshots of internal systems or unreleased artwork is safe.

Does converting PNG to JPG lose transparency?
Yes — JPG doesn't support transparency, so transparent areas are filled with a background color (white by default) during conversion.

Will my image lose quality if I convert PNG to WebP and back?
Each lossy re-encode introduces some quality loss, so it's best to keep an original copy rather than repeatedly round-tripping between formats.
