Limits & things to know
- Screen capture requires a browser that supports the Screen Capture API and an explicit permission grant each time — Chrome, Edge and Firefox on desktop are the reliable combinations.
- Output is WebM, not MP4. Most modern players and platforms accept it, but some older editing software does not.
- GIF conversion downsamples heavily by design: 10 frames per second at 480 pixels wide keeps the file usable, at the cost of smoothness and detail.
- Recording holds data in memory, so long captures grow large quickly. Record short, focused clips.
- Mobile browsers generally do not support screen capture at all.
Troubleshooting
The browser will not offer a screen to record
Screen capture needs a secure context, a supported desktop browser, and OS-level screen recording permission — macOS in particular requires the browser to be allowed under Privacy settings.
The recording has no sound
System audio capture is only offered for certain sources, most reliably a browser tab, and must be ticked in the picker when you choose what to share.
The GIF is enormous
GIF is an inefficient format for screen content. Record a shorter clip, or keep the WebM video, which is dramatically smaller for the same duration.
Privacy & data handling
The recording is captured by your browser and stays in the tab's memory — nothing is streamed or uploaded to us. Be aware that a screen recording captures whatever is visible, including notifications and other windows, so close anything private before you start.

Frequently asked questions
Can I record system audio, not just my microphone?
If your browser and OS support it (most Chromium browsers on desktop do when capturing a tab), you can include tab or system audio alongside the video.
Is there a recording length limit?
No hard limit is enforced, but longer recordings use more memory in your browser tab, so very long sessions (an hour or more) may need to be split up.
Why is my GIF export smaller in dimensions than my recording?
GIF export automatically scales and reduces frame rate to keep file sizes reasonable — you can adjust these settings before exporting.
Does this work on mobile browsers?
Screen capture APIs are primarily supported on desktop browsers; most mobile browsers don't expose a screen-recording API to web pages.
Do I need to grant special permissions?
Your browser will prompt you to choose what to share (tab, window, or screen) — this is a standard, revocable browser permission, not a ToolKloud account permission.
