Limits & things to know
- This tool draws a barcode from a value you already own. It does not assign or register GTINs — retail EAN and UPC numbers must be obtained from GS1 before they are valid in a shop.
- 2D symbologies (QR, Data Matrix, PDF417) are not part of this tool. Use the QR code generator for QR.
- Scan reliability in print depends on size, contrast and the quiet zone. Very small labels or low-toner prints can fail even when the encoding is correct.
Troubleshooting
The value is rejected for EAN-13 or UPC-A
Those symbologies are numeric and fixed length: EAN-13 needs 12 digits (or 13 including a correct check digit), UPC-A needs 11 (or 12). Letters, spaces and dashes only work in CODE128.
A scanner will not read the printed label
Print the SVG rather than an enlarged PNG, keep the white margin either side of the bars, and avoid printing retail formats smaller than roughly 2 cm wide.
The PNG looks blurry in a document
The PNG is already 4x the on-screen size — place it at its natural size or smaller. When the final size is unknown, use the SVG instead.
Privacy & data handling
The barcode is encoded and drawn by JavaScript inside your browser tab. The value you type is never sent to our server or to a third party, and nothing is stored once you close the page.

Frequently asked questions
Are generated barcodes scannable?
Yes! They follow international barcode rendering standards and work with all laser & camera scanners.
Can I use these barcodes on products I sell in shops?
Only if you already own the GTIN. This tool draws a barcode from a number you supply; retail EAN and UPC numbers must be obtained from GS1 before a shop's system will recognise them. For internal use — asset tags, warehouse labels, archive boxes — CODE128 needs no registration at all.
Which format should I choose?
CODE128 for anything internal, because it accepts letters and any length. EAN-13 for retail products outside the US and Canada, UPC-A inside them. If a supplier or marketplace specified a format, use that one.
Why was my number rejected?
EAN-13 and UPC-A are fixed-length numeric formats: 12 digits for EAN-13 and 11 for UPC-A, with the check digit calculated for you. Anything with letters, spaces or dashes has to be CODE128.
Should I download the PNG or the SVG?
SVG for anything that will be printed, because it scales to the label size without softening. PNG for slides, listings and messages where a vector file would not be accepted.
